An expansion driven by demand
Home to over 95 airlines operating 900 flights each day to 160 destinations worldwide, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is one of the busiest airports in the world. To meet growing demand, Arup and Mott MacDonald were brought on as a joint venture to provide full consultancy services for a new midfield concourse development.
One team, one vision
How do you build an airport concourse with a team that spans two engineering firms, one architecture firm and several sub consultants working across two different continents? The answer is the dynamic interaction of physical, human and digital. We used BIM technology to design and digitally test the entire project before constructing it physically. And because everyone involved had a single view of the project, the result was fewer inconsistencies and greater certainty.

The concourse is home to more than 35 cutting-edge green technologies.
This includes glazing panels designed to reflect over 40 per cent of solar heat and more than 1,200 sq metres of solar panels nestled on the roof to harness renewable energy. Advanced use of technology like BIM is enabling us to handle greater levels of complexity with a higher degree of confidence.
